This year’s Cyber Week shattered records…

Instead of flocking to malls, big box stores, or small shops, consumers flocked to online deals in droves, spending billions from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday.

The future of retail is more digital than ever.

Thanksgiving Day didn’t slow Americans down from spending big online, as e-commerce sales reached unprecedented levels.

Here are six key takeaways from this year’s e-commerce boom…

  1. Thanksgiving Day Sets Online Spending Record

According to Adobe Digital Insights, American consumers spent an all-time high of $6.1 billion online on Thanksgiving, an 8.8% increase from last year. This growth outpaced the previous year’s 5.5% increase.

“Cyber Week is off to a strong start, where bigger-than-expected discounts on Thanksgiving propelled impulse shopping in categories like electronics and apparel,” said Vivek Pandya, an analyst at Adobe Digital Insights.

Leveraging data from its Commerce Cloud platform, Salesforce estimated an even higher figure of $8.1 billion for Thanksgiving Day, reflecting an 8% year-over-year increase.

  1. Retail Giants Like Amazon and Walmart Kick Off Early Deals

With a shortened holiday shopping season this year— five fewer days than usual—retailers launched their Black Friday promotions early. Amazon rolled out discounts as early as November 21, while Walmart began its sales earlier in the week.

Wedbush Securities analysts noted that Amazon’s rapid delivery times give it a competitive edge, especially with the condensed shopping timeline.

Deals were particularly strong in toys, with discounts averaging 27.2%, followed by electronics, which saw price reductions of up to 26.5% on Thanksgiving Day.

  1. Cyber Monday Breaks Records Once Again

Cyber Monday retained its title as the year’s biggest online shopping day, with U.S. consumers spending a record $13.3 billion, a 7.3% increase over last year.

Toys, apparel, and electronics led sales, with toy sales soaring by 680%.

Mobile shopping continued to dominate, accounting for 57% of all online sales on Cyber Monday, totaling $7.6 billion—an increase of 13.3% compared to last year.

  1. Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) Options Skyrocket

The ongoing impact of inflation prompted more consumers to turn to Buy Now, Pay Later services, which reached an all-time high of $991.2 million in sales on Cyber Monday. This trend underscores the growing appeal of flexible payment options during tighter economic conditions.

  1. Cyber Week Total Hits $41.1 Billion

The entire Cyber Week period saw robust e-commerce activity, with total sales hitting $41.1 billion over five days, reflecting an 8.2% year-over-year increase.

While online shopping continues to dominate, some brick-and-mortar retailers also saw increased foot traffic. Stores like Apple and Target benefited from the dual-channel shopping trend, while traditional electronics stores saw a significant decline in traffic, down 16.5% compared to last year.

Cyber Week’s record-setting performance reaffirms the continued shift toward e-commerce.
