The next 12 months marketers can face heavy, costly and arbitrary regulations, as well as executive orders from Obama.
But here is one warning we must be watching:
The FTC is warning about the Internet of Things and its data collection.
The Internet of Things opens up new possibilities, but marketers must not forget their privacy commitments to their customers. Consumers don’t want their privacy compromised.
FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez emphasized three things to strive for:
- Security by design.
- Data minimization.
- Increased transparency – giving users notice and choice for unexpected data uses.
It’s possible the FTC will institute privacy regulations. But whether or not it does, marketers should heed Ramirez’s warnings.
